History of Child Care
- Until the 19th century, medical doctors were responsible for the treatment of adults, and the majority of health care administered to children was done by mothers and midwives.
- Dr. Abraham Jacobi is considered to be the father of American pediatrics because he was the first pediatrican/pediatric that was successful in medical for children and he was a foreigner. Jacobi trained in Germany and moved to New York City in 1853.
- He was given a teaching chair for the specialty at that institution in 1861 that allowed him to teach the pathology of infancy and childhood.
- Pediatrics for numerous medical journals and assisted in development of children's wards in several New York City hospitals.
- The first hospital was 'The Hospital for Sick Children' in London, England was established on Valentine's Day in 1852. It was the first hospital devoted exclusively to the treatment of children. American children were treated in adult hospitals until 1855, when the first stand-alone hospital for children was established in Philadelphia.
